Red Deer County Council recently approved the re-opening of an indoor shooting range in Springbrook.First reading was granted on May 9, 2017, and a public hearing was held on June 20. At the public hearing, several people spoke in favour of the facility while no one spoke in opposition. The shooting range is located within the existing Springbrook Multi-Plex. Originally, the facility was built and operated by the Canadian Armed Forces as a way to train new soldiers. With the de-commissioning of the base, the shooting range also ceased operation. The range passed all inspections during its use by the armed forces, but will need to pass a fire inspection conducted by County staff. The range will provide shooting opportunities for Provincial Sheriffs, RCMP, armored truck guards, Fish and Wildlife Officers, and Fish and Game members.According to several speakers at the public hearing, there is a pressing need for shooting range facilities in Central Alberta.
