For Red Deer County, the Laura Avenue extension project is a large single project that involves the total reconstruction of the existing Waskasoo Avenue (which is being renamed “Laura Avenue”) from Lantern Street to Leva Avenue. This will involve an entire re-build of this section of road to an urban standard and requires the realignment of the road onto a new undeveloped road allowance. The project will contain two roundabouts: one will be at the intersection of Lantern Street & Laura Avenue and the other will be at the intersection of Liberty Avenue and Laura Avenue. Upgraded water lines, storm water collection and underground power will be included in this project for servicing new commercial developments coming to this area. In a separate project, Alberta Transportation will be constructing an additional roundabout at the intersection of Laura Avenue and Leva Avenue to accommodate their new access into Gasoline Alley off of Highway 2 southbound.Following the re-opening of the intersection at Lantern Street / Laura Avenue, the intersection at Laura Avenue / Liberty Avenue will be closed for approximately 6 to 7 weeks. Appropriate detours and signage will be in place to safely redirect motorists to the many businesses in this area. As the Gaetz Avenue Interchange project will be creating a new Gasoline Alley access for southbound Highway 2 traffic at Laura Avenue, this road reconstruction is necessary to accommodate that new traffic flow. This project will provide improved and more convenient access for motorists to the many vibrant businesses that are establishing their base in Gasoline Alley. The Red Deer County project began in early April and has a contract completion date of September 15. The progress of the work is currently on schedule.
