What is the difference between a Development Permit and a Building Permit?A development permit approves the applicant for the designated use of the land in accordance with Red Deer County’s Land Use Bylaw. A building permit, on the other hand, approves the applicant for the structure(s) being built in accordance with the Alberta Safety Codes Act.As of January 2016, Red Deer County now issues building permits in addition to development permits. Applicants are able to obtain all Safety Codes permits - building, electrical, gas, plumbing and private sewage, at the County Centre.I’m building a shed. Do I need a development permit?If the shed does not exceed 10 m2 (110 ft2) and is not permanently attached to the ground, a development permit is not required. For any accessory building exceeding 10 m2 (110 ft2), a development permit will be required. Please note that a building permit may be required even if a development permit is not.How much does a development permit cost? The application fees for a development permit vary depending on the type of development. Please contact Planning and Development and let them know what your plans are in order to give you the most accurate fee associated with your development. The current fee schedule is available online at www.rdcounty.ca or at our Planning and Development counter at the County Centre. Please note that Safety Codes permits have their own costs associated with each discipline.Can I run a business out of my home?Home Business - Minor:Means the secondary use of a principal dwelling by at least one permanent resident of the dwelling to conduct a business activity or occupation. A home business - minor may include a home office.Home Business - Major:Means the secondary use of a principal dwelling, its accessory structures and site, or combinations thereof, by at least one permanent resident of the dwelling to conduct a business activity or occupation, and which creates additional traffic.
