At the February 7 County Council meeting, Red Deer County formally entered into 3 more partnerships with its neighbours. The County agreed to provide a number of different services to the Village of Elnora, Village of Delburne, and the Town of Bowden – all either related to Planning and Development or Protective Services. The partnerships are important for multiple reasons. First off, it provides a consistent level of service for residents living within these centers. Secondly, it allows ‘on the ground’ decision makers to focus less on administrative work and more on service provision. Finally, it shows important cooperation between municipalities – something strongly encouraged by the Provincial government.According to County Manager Curtis Herzberg, “This is a really good opportunity to place people in the best possible situation. These partnerships allow those with the expertise to focus on administration, while freeing up the time of those who are able to put decisions into action. We have received nothing but positive comments from members of the respective municipalities on the level of service they are receiving.”Councillor Phillip Massier echoed the comments. “This is the future of municipal cooperation in our province. We need to work together to provide the best level of service for our ratepayers at a realistic cost.”The partnerships will not be revenue generators for Red Deer County. However, they will allow the County to provide more economy of scale in areas such as Fire Services and Planning and Development. County News will report on any further municipal partnerships as they develop.
