County Wins Prestigious Economic Development Award

Ec Dev - Tourism

Red Deer County, along with 10 other local municipalities, received an Excellence in Economic Development Award from the International Economic Development Council at their annual award ceremony in Toronto.

The award recognized the municipalities coming together to work collaboratively on a Destination Management Plan. The goal was to create an experience that will engage the visitor and encourage them to spend longer periods of time in the area and increase the economic impact of the region.

According to Michael Langley, IEDC Board Chair, “On behalf of the IEDC board of directors and Excellence in Economic Development Awards Advisory Committee, congratulations to Red Deer County. Not only did they work to provide a necessary service to their community; but also, their participation in the awards program sheds light on their stellar projects which other communities can now use as a benchmark.”

The International Economic Development Council (IEDC) is a non-profit membership organization serving economic developers. With more than 5,000 members, IEDC is the largest organization of its kind. Economic developers promote economic well-being and quality of life for their communities, by creating, retaining and expanding jobs that facilitate growth, enhance wealth and provide a stable tax base.

A theme based tourism to connect our municipalities together is being planned. Attention will be paid to retaining and /or providing an authentic sense of place that features agriculture, western culture, heritage arts, outdoor activities and focus on the region as a whole. Attention will also be paid to retaining authentic architecture and the integrity of historic places and assets such as buildings, historic main streets and museums.

Red Deer County would like to congratulate Economic Development staff for their impressive success in promoting regional tourism.
