In 2018, Red Deer County will host Environmental Farm Plan (EFP) workshops every month. This will be a chance for County farmers to start, finish, or update their EFP.EFP has evolved a lot in recent years. The global agriculture and food industry, has identified the growing demand from end consumers, for knowing how their food was produced. This desire for knowledge stretches right back to the “primary producer”.Here in Canada, agriculture producer groups are eyeing Environmental Farm Plan as a way for our industry to demonstrate the environmental sustainability of our farms and ranches.Ultimately, what this means, is that the more farmers and ranchers from Canada / Alberta / Red Deer County there are with up-to-date EFP, the better it is for everyone involved in our agriculture and food industry. Our hope is that these regularly scheduled workshops will help producers in Red Deer County continue to showcase their environmental stewardship. Red Deer County has two Environmental Farm Plan Technicians (Aimee Delaney and Ken Lewis) to help you start, complete, and update your Environmental Farm Plan.Environmental Farm Planning has now gone digital. This means you can easily update your EFP as you do things on your farm. It also means you can update your plan as EFP evolves, which it does in response to industry and consumer demand. For example, there is a new chapter in EFP, that looks at Species at Risk.We will use this space to address a different EFP topic each month in the County News, so please keep an eye on it in 2018!Please call us any time (at 403.342.8654) if you have questions about Environmental Farm Planning.
